Perhaps it is only my perception, but with the arrival of the new year, it seems that the world is in a moment of active and outward renewal, after a few years of inward personal reflection. We are at the time of taking action, focusing our strength on being better, more sustainable and with a greater emotional balance.

And that is precisely how I see the recent steps taken by Mutina. The essence of the Italian brand, which it has always shown proudness of, is to be a company in constant evolution. And the last few months have been especially relevant in this daring character.

Close to reaching its 20th anniversary, with Massimo Orsini at the helm, Mutina opens a new chapter in its history with the inauguration of new headquarters in Italy. A custom-made-house to host every facet of Mutina’s own universe: Mutina Collections, Mutina Interiors, Mutina Editions and Mutina for Art. Under the name of Spazio Mutina, it was designed by Studio Urquiola in collaboration with the Mutina Project Division to be “a fluid exhibition space where the product is presented in always different forms, functions and colours”,  as the renowned designer said.

The dialogue between Mutina and designers has been honoured all over the space. In addition, the legendary brand celebrates its confident relationship with the team through a series of podiums dedicated to the work of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic, Tokujin Yoshioka, Raw Edges, Hella Jongerius and Barber & Osgerby.

The interiors are furnished with works by Kvadrat, Vitra, Moroso, Cassina, Agape, Fantini, Frama, Artek and Mattiazzi among others, as well as pieces especially designed by Studio Urquiola.

The truth is that Spazio Mutina is a place to discover the brand’s novelties while being seduced by the constant interaction between nature and light. Greenery has a strong presence in the showroom, where it is possible to meet and spend leisure time in a continuous fluidity between working and recreation spaces, inside and outside.

“We inhabit our space as if it was a tailored suit, sewn with care throughout its seventeen years of history”, said Massimo Orsini. In addition to the major indoor area, the new headquarters has a large green area designed by agronomist and landscape architect Flavio Pollano, in collaboration with Patricia Urquiola, who has abandoned the traditional formality of gardens in favour of connections and ecological admissibility, featuring 3800 plants belonging to 240 different species and varieties.

Sustainability is one of the axes on which Mutina’s objectives for the future revolve but acting from the present. For this reason, the exterior of the new facilities has as little asphalt as possible, except where it is absolutely necessary for water drainage, and will soon install a photovoltaic system to obtain energy with zero waste. One more gesture towards the construction of a better world, full of exciting projects, loyal to Mutina’s creative spirit but with an eye on the future.

The change takes place now, on a day-to-day basis and it depends on all of us because, as Gill Scott-Heron sang in 1970, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”.
