Casa Puuc

When space speaks

Photographed by Fabian Martínez

Casa Puuc, as you see it now, has been an aesthetical conversation between the architect Manuel Amabilis (Merida, Mexico, 1886-1966), my father, Francisco Fernández Orozco and I”, explains its owner, Claudia Fernández.

Claudia Fernández (Mexico City, 1965) is a multifaceted artist. She has worked with media as diverse as photography, video, installations and even educational and socially engaged projects. Her personality and her way of working—emotional and spontaneous, daring and radical—have been reflected both in the renovation process and in the final result. Passionately, she tells me about how her intention has been to preserve by revaluing the imperfect, whether it was the marks of time on hydraulic tiles, the irregular burnishing of the stucco on the walls or the intrepid layouts of some spaces where she took Amabilis’ already unique schemes even further.

The interiors were configured with mexican modernist furniture that Claudia has collected for years. The result is a selection of 20th century designs by Mario Bellini, Clara Porset, Edmund Spence, Pirwi furniture and a sculptural creation by Claudia herself. Surprisingly, objects converse with each other and their surroundings , engaging with both tradition and modernity, expanding beyond what is merely decorative or functional.
