Vasto and Mesura

Symbolic Landscape

… Or, Mesura and Vasto. As if in a work of fiction whose characters’ names bear a special symbolism, the personalities of both the Mesura architectural studio and that of the Vasto art gallery permeate this project and bring distinction to their respective brands. Together they become entwined in a dance that is a masterful balancing act.

The starting point is an old industrial building located in Barcelona’s Poblenou district. It had previously been occupied by offices and compartmentalised like a rabbit warren, leaving the wrought iron columns disguised and dozens of cubic metres lost under a false ceiling that also hid the unique system of joists. For its owners, the gallery owner Carmen Riestra and the businessman Albert Monjo, it was important “to undertake this project with someone who had total respect for the space and would allow it to fully express itself”, as Albert explains. “Mesura perfectly understood our need to preserve it and to give it form, while playing with materiality, volumes, etc.”

The beauty of this industrial landscape, which is present both inside and outside the loft, is undeniable. But what experience does it bring in terms of comfort? Carmen explains the effectiveness of radiant floor heating. Not many people have been invited yet, but some friends have already spent time happily lying on the floor. I don’t see any curtains either… Carmen springs into action, patiently and amused, to show me how automatic shutters block out the light. Everything has been thought out down to the last detail, and all that remains is to wait and see what new surprises will be on display here.
