Building meaning through silence

Written by Sisse Bro

Belgian designer Cédric Etienne has built a concept based on equal parts architecture and philosophy. In a 19th century listed maritime building in the harbor of Antwerp, he has created a studio space with room for creativity and for stillness; to him those two go hand in hand. Together with a small team of interior designers under the name of Studio Corkinho, he conceives still rooms in residential and hospitality projects, offices and public spaces, encouraging people to breathe and find wellbeing by means of a silent environment. During a recent visit, Cédric described his own transition and demonstrated how he channels meaning into objects and architecture.

Tell me about your discovery of the material cork and the creative journey that followed.

Being introduced to cork was like finding a material which represents time and simplicity at its very essence. I was especially fascinated by cork’s sustainable life cycle and how it can be incorporated in a cradle-to-cradle approach. Since then it’s been my mission to transform the perception of cork through modern craft into a noble contemporary material.

In your words, how can architecture and interiors be/become carriers of meaning?

I see architecture as a larger field of creative consciousness. In its most primitive origin architecture helped humans to shelter, and I think today, if we deeply listen to the spirit of architecture, its voice is guiding us to go back to the essence. Not as a funny trip to post on social media but rather as a contemplative retreat, to align body and mind and to feel oneness in the present moment. Architecture can educate mankind to listen more deeply to our inner voice and make decisions that will help us grow. I believe that architecture and interiors can carry meaning by shaping experiences to improve wellbeing at home, at work or as a retreat. People are often too stressed and overworked, and spaces can inspire to realign and find inner peace, not as a visual pleasure but truly as a meaningful shelter for the mind.
