Liveness colors in broken casts
Sancal‘s 50 years of experience have involved an intense and enriching process of creative growth in which passion has guided the steps. Among the various actions programmed by the Mediterranean brand to celebrate its anniversary, there is one that stands out: the launch of a series of pieces under the name ‘Fiesta’.
The collection to commemorate the date has a printed fabric as unique as the anniversary it celebrates. Developed in Estudio Sancal together with the Byborre weaving factory, Day and Night are the definitive colors of Fiesta. Its knit construction and composition, which includes a large presence of merino wool, favors the natural elasticity of the fabric and adapts perfectly to the contours and silhouettes of each piece that makes up the collection.
Estudio Sancal was born with the purpose of providing technical support to the freelance designers with whom Santiago Castaño began working in the mid-80s. For his daughters, Esther and Elena, today in charge of the company, the atelier is the creative heart of the company. There are several designers who have already contributed to the attractive and lively Sancal universe. After twelve years of collaboration, the relationship with Note Studio can be considered more than solid. Together, they have signed designs as iconic for the firm as the Tonella or the Isla armchairs.
In the Void Matters collection, it was Note who launched the challenge. It all started with a sketch hanging on a board in their studio in Sweden, and a question out loud: Was it a solid piece or just a fine structure? Hence his reflection on the positive and negative of the matter. This is how a collection that reflects on the importance of emptiness in everything that surrounds us, emerges.
Note Studio’s practice born from a way of creating that does not care about prejudices. That is what we could see at Nordicthink, the showroom and interior design studio in Barcelona that hosted Sinergias: an exhibition and event that, on the occasion of the BDW, brought together Note and Sancal to talk about the intellectual and physical process of creating a piece.
During the cozy evening, Malin Engvall and Kristtofer Fargestrom presented Note’s way of working. The routine at the studio relies on mutual collaboration. Every idea, function and desire can be intervened by any member of their multidisciplinary team beyond the formal limits. This, actually, may be the main synergy with Sancal. The company located in Yecla, Murcia, is bold in its search for an optimal result, as its motto says, “break the cast and be happy.”
