Posidonia

The raw beauty of becoming

From a very young age, society instills in individuals a very tangible pressure to have a calling or a deep passion for something. We have to identify our purpose, choose what we want to study, and decide on our lifelong ambition, all at just 16 years old. Fortunately, many people actually discover their purpose at the expected time, fulfilling social expectations. However, what about that portion of the youth that needs more time?

Compelled to find a vocation, many young people can feel lost, misunderstood or scared they might never uncover what really is their purpose in life. On many occasions, however, the answer is right around the corner. Julia Palomeque, founder of Posidonia, identifies with this exact feeling: “I never really knew what to do when I grew up”, she explains, “I never woke up as a child wanting to be a doctor”.

Julia studied many things, but was never actually convinced by any: “I felt like I was going around in circles”. That is, until she found ceramics: “Suddenly, I found this thing, and it made me happy”. Five years later, the 24-year-old from Andalusia owns her own ceramics brand, where she displays and sells her own designs

It all started in 2020 when, bored from being unable to find her own hobby, a friend told her what would become the answer she had been looking for all this time: she proposed ceramic classes. They attended their first lesson, and Julia fell in love. One lesson became two, and slowly but steadily her newfound activity became not only her hobby but her full-time job. Motivated to make her passion for ceramics her dedication, Posidonia was born.

“Ceramics and the ocean are the two things that give me peace”, she describes, “I feel really connected to both”. Reminiscing about her childhood, Julia recalls filling her bedroom shelves with pebbles and shells that she would pick up from the beach: “Instead of pictures or stuffed animals, there were always shells”. “Now, instead of that, they are occupied with all of my pottery”, she remarks.

Inspired by the ocean, Julia came across Posidonia, a Mediterranean seaweed species that enhances marine ecosystems by oxygenating the water, and offering shelter and food for many fish, and it became the name of what would be her own brand. Just like the name, the artist aims to link her creations with nature.

Crafted using the modeling technique, each piece is organic and one of a kind. Yet, it is precisely this rawness that she seeks: “They are unique pieces that connect you with nature either by shapes, textures, or colors, and at the same time objects that have a path and are part of a manual and natural process”, she describes. Julia conceives her designs not only to be looked at as decorative, “but also to be experienced through the senses”. By experimenting with iron, shavings or even vinegar, the ceramist attains that connection with the natural world.

From never envisioning a career in the arts to leading her own ceramic workshops, Julia’s vocation has immersed her into an everlasting curiosity for experimentation: “I started to read about types of glazes, techniques…”, she explains, “and now I’m interested in stone and wood”. Even though she’s constantly investigating new approaches to ceramics, her pieces always bear her imprint, in the most literal and equally abstract way.

“My way of dressing and my personality are very calm and neutral”, she details, “There are ceramics that have drawings or colors, but this doesn’t exist in my ceramics, and it doesn’t exist in my life either”. Nature, rawness and tranquility represent the ceramist’s core values, collectively constituting the essence of Posidonia, a brand born from the beautiful paths that life unexpectedly reveals.
