At Piazza Santo Stefano, we were moved by an artistic installation in which the color of silence spoke a loud and playful discourse. Cc-tapis showroom was completely reconceptualised by the creative mind of Faye Toogood, who converted it into the ‘Rude Arts Club’ with pieces she designed for cc-tapis and Tacchini. Cosmic is the first collaboration with Tacchini whereas Rude is the third one of handmade rugs together with cc-tapis.
The result, as seen during Salone Milano 2024, was a house full of unique rooms, each of them designed to amplify the diverse output of Faye’s creativity. “These two collaborative collections have been transformative for the Toogood studio. Although both collections are entirely distinctive, I wanted to harness the enduring art-school ethos of utopian collaboration”. The Rude Arts Club was a colorful ‘home’ to discover her latest works: the Rude rugs by cc-tapis and the Cosmic collection of upholstery and furniture by Tacchini.
The intuitive touch of Faye gives life to experimental and sculptural objects that emphasize the nature of material – pure and irregular.“I try to put as much of myself, and my energy into the objects,” explains.”My process is tactile and emotional. The shape of the chair came from pushing my fingers into the clay maquette, squashing the three layers together. I don’t connect with design done at a distance. These biomorphic shapes haven’t been created on a computer, they are found by hand”.
Rude Collection by cc-tapis aimed to be bold; a sensual and sculptural collection of rugs bringing together high craft and hijinks. The mischievous motifs and provocative color were inspired by Francis Bacon’s paintings: “All that visceral fleshliness. Vivid pink and bloody red jarring with orange and lilac”, reflects Faye when remembers her visit to an exhibition by the iconic painter. For the British designer, the Rude Collection emphasizes a powerful idea: “There is a little of the profane and a little of the profound.Yes I am poking fun but I am also making a statement about what it means to inhabit a body and what that means personally for me: an artist inhabiting a body that is changing. As time passes, I see beauty and sexuality from a wildly different perspective”, declares Faye.
This sensual perspective is also perceived in the Cosmic Collection by Faye Toogood for Tacchini. A sofa that seems like a pillow at first glance. Full of irregular round shapes, it represents the organic forms of nature. “My process is tactile and emotional. The shape of a chair came from pushing my fingers into the clay maquette, squashing the three layers together, I don’t connect with designs at distance”.
We were touched and revolved by Faye’s work at cc-tapis place in Milano. It was, by far, the place we would love to inhabit for as much time as possible; the one that made us dream with other and iconographic future worlds.
