Solar, Orbit, Lunar, Astral and Stellar are terms that instantly drive our minds to the imagery of the cosmos and celestial beauty. Rooted in the language of astronomy, these five words are used to describe the universe we live within. Nonetheless, these five words also belong to the collaborative collection created by two design masters, Toogood and Tacchini. Baptized as Cosmic, the collection pays an ode to the elliptical nature of space and to the galactic experience of interacting with these pieces.
The British contemporary brand and the Italian design veteran have come together to blast off into outer space with a unique set of items that bring out their shared philosophy: the sense of play. Fearless in their experimentation and embracing the unconventional, the two iconic brands have fused modernity, glamour, playfulness and rawness to develop sculptural pieces that unite the artistic with the everyday.
Natural, organic shapes and timeless materials that convey raw beauty form the core pillars of the collection. Full of irregular and round outlines, Cosmic represents the irreplaceable blend of ingenuity and style. This combination, where honestly is present in every design, endows the objects with softness, offering a fresh interpretation of Tacchini’s infallible upholstery.
At the centre of Toogood’s collaboration with Tacchini is Solar: a sofa that, at first glance, looks like a stack of cushions. With her signature mix of wit and style, Faye Toogood invites the individual to crash land on these padded stacks. The designer combines sculpted silhouettes with softness and calmness. The almost-sagging squishiness of this chair, and its slack tactility, make it exceptional in Tacchini’s stable of bold and handsome furniture. Comfort and sophistication united in modernity.
Distinguished by her distinctive tactile and emotional design process, Faye Toogood’s creations are found by hand: “I try to put as much of myself, and my energy into the objects. I don’t connect with design done at a distance”, she explains, “The shape of the chair came from pushing my fingers into the clay maquette, squashing the three layers together”. Solar exudes a relaxed aesthetic, capturing the casual elegance of Faye Toogood’s studio.
However, Solar is just one part of the collection: Orbit, a coffee table and desk, takes its name from the way light wraps around the tables’ surfaces, tracing the soft wooden curves. Escaping from perfection, the concentric ovals of Orbit are not uniform, characterizing Faye Toogood’s tactile and emotional creative process.
Alongside the stacked upholstery pieces and Orbit, the collection also features the exceptional designs of Astral, Lunar and Stellar, each bringing its own particular element to the ensemble. The elliptical metal cabinet, the quilted light pendants and the padded mirror all enhance the ethos of this collaboration. Forms that invite you to crumple or squeeze them. “The lights are covered in a paper fabric that you can scrunch to change the shape, with a beautiful diffused glow at the centre like an egg yolk”, states Faye Toogood.
Different versions of round and irregular geometry define Cosmic. Sensory textures dance on the surprising curves of the objects, bringing to life a curated fusion of relaxed glamour. Faye Toogood’s disruptive energy takes Tacchini’s trademark upholstery and stuffs it in unexpected places, giving birth to Cosmic. A new way of understanding design where tactile comfort and sophisticated intrigue define a new galaxy of furniture.
