Isn’t it curious how, without any expectation or hint, a seemingly normal experience can have such an impact on someone’s life? With no previous notice, a certain activity or trip can mark one’s life forever. Funnily enough, as it is unfolding, one might not even realize its importance. As to countless individuals, that scenario happened to Børge Mogensen, one of the most influential designers of Danish Modernism and the founding designer of Fredericia.

While traveling, in the unpredictable nature of serendipity, some people unlock a new passion, some others discover their new favorite city, and the lucky ones might even encounter someone special. In Morgensen’s case, however, it was slightly different: he was inspired to create what would become one of his most celebrated furniture designs. That is The Spanish Chair.

Designed for Fredericia in 1958, Andalucia was the backdrop for this iconic masterpiece. During a family trip through Spain, Morgensen came across an ornate chair with wide armrests, a traditional style rooted in Spain’s medieval furniture construction. Moved by his discovery, he decided to modernise the style using solid oak and sturdy leather for the seat and back, secured by adjustable straps.

Almost 70 years later, the result still stands as an admired piece in furniture history. The original design, in its timeless spirit, continues to captivate with its aesthetic and character. Expertly crafted from solid oak or walnut with geometrical precision and featuring high-quality saddle leather, The Spanish Chair develops a unique patina that appears to become more stunning over time, enhancing its beauty.

As a magical illustration of Børge Mogensen’s take on modernity, the chair blends original functionalism, skilled craftsmanship and elegant luxury. Because of its modern essence, Fredericia has now introduced The Spanish Chair in sophisticated dark brown saddle leather. By presenting this new version, the design is revitalized again, paying homage to the designer’s pioneering vision.

“During a family trip through Spain, Morgensen came across an ornate chair with wide armrests, a traditional style rooted in Spain’s medieval furniture construction“.

The dark brown shade effortlessly fuses the warm, earthy tones of the European oak and emphasises the deep, beautiful hues of the American walnut wood, transcending trends and enduring the test of time. Quality materials, curated craftsmanship, and ageless design converge in Morgensen’s emblematic chair, underscoring Fredericia’s commitment as a sustainable furniture company.

There isn’t a more refined form of sustainability than ensuring longevity in everyday objects. By crafting furniture that lasts for generations, Fredericia creates pieces that can be preserved and cherished for centuries, becoming family heirlooms and eternal relics. And that is exactly what Børge Mogensen intended with his work. In his own words, “to create items that serve people and give them the leading role instead of forcing them to adapt”.

“The Spanish Chair is a true embodiment of his legacy, which reflects a lifelong ambition to create functional and beautiful furniture designed to withstand the passage of time”.

The Danish designer found inspiration all over the world, always maintaining its true belief that furniture should create a sense of tranquility and a modest appearance. His unmatched skill in producing iconic furniture from natural materials and classic designs ensures his work’s relevance across different eras, generations, and cultures.
