‘Variations’ is a meditation on contemporary design emergent from the dialogue between Colin King and The Future Perfect gallery Founder David Alhadeff.
Carrying with it the individual stories of the collaborators, the collection references Colin’s origins as a professional dancer, which preceded his quick-ascending career in interior design, while underscoring The Future Perfect’s long-standing commitment to creating a platform for emerging talent.
Blending Art Deco and Neoclassicism with elements of a Donald Judd-inspired formalism—, it traces the embodiment of American design‘s journey to carve its own unique visual language.
‘Variations’ is conceptualized as a gentle reconciliation of grandiosity and quietude, improvisation and composition. Named for a series of performances by legendary dancer and choreographer Merce Cunningham, the collection is designed to embody a spontaneous choreography of the unexpected; as though the pieces are dancing with their environment, this collection navigates space as does a series of bodies, whose shared language is found through the implication of movement. The Variations collection exemplifies the graceful and timeless aesthetics shared by King and The Future Perfect.
“David has been a friend and mentor to me for many years and it was a privilege to partner with such a respected voice in the industry. Having worked with The Future Perfect throughout my career, to release this furniture collection felt like the natural next step in my relationship with the gallery,” says King about the launch of Variations. “I am a visual storyteller by nature and through this collection we have created simple, elegant, and functional pieces that invite interaction.”
A marquee release for The Future Perfect in its 20th anniversary year, the open-edition collection of eight pieces is the most expansive line of furniture produced by the gallery, slated to launch on October 19th at all three of The Future Perfect’s locations simultaneously, in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
