Breathing, thinking, walking, feeling the breeze on your face, enjoying the sound of our footsteps on the mountain… In short, connecting with life and being aware that we are part of a whole; part of a nature that as a society we have tried, until now, to control, minimize or soften.
The ‘Las Insólitas’ project was born from the desire to reconnect with our essence, with that unprecedented thing that makes us unique. We spoke with Kathleen Boonen —co-founder together with Gaëlle Morat, of this eco-sustainable agency based in an inspiring farmhouse in the midst of Tarragona. Named Mas Pla Roig, it serves as home, office and intimate stage for all kinds of shootings.
‘Las Insólitas’ defines itself as an eco-sustainable agency. What do you mean by that definition? What actions do you carry out in that direction?
We mean that eco-sustainability is one of the red lines that we follow during the creative process of our projects. The other red line is the name of our agency itself ‘Las Insolitas’, i.e. unusual (adjective and masculine noun which astonishes, surprises). In each project our aim is to bring an unusual (insólitas) approach, concept and vision. One of the actions that we have developed is “the Green Day experience”, an exclusive concept that we offer to executives, brainstormers, creatives, bloggers etc. to take a breath from their daily routine. We offer them a unique experience combining sustainability and creativity in an inspirational environment. We believe that reconnecting with the outdoors and nature can stimulate innovation for everybody.
How did you coordinate the work with Cécile Carré in the development of the masia? What things seemed essential to you in renovating the space?
We have known each other since we were teenagers and there is a strong connection and friendship between us. We both had the same vision to make something minimal of the place and keep it in its essence.
What did you learn living between Barcelona and Mas Pla Roig?
The Mas offers me a fantastic opportunity to disconnect from my urban life. In Mas Pla Roig, I learn how to live following the rhythm of nature. The light, the area and the Mas are also for me a rich and endless source of inspiration. I’m totally fascinated by learning, year after year, the art of harvesting and making my own olive oil.
Kathleen, you were a stylist for various fashion publications for many years. What relationship do you find between that world and that of Mas Pla Roig?
Indeed, as a fashion stylist and art director, I developed for many years my eye and my sense of scenography creating different universes and telling visual stories. When I discovered Mas Pla Roig and its scenery, I immediately had a clear vision of its potential. It inspired me to create a Mediterranean and minimalist atmosphere. I am very happy to see that it is liked by others, as Mas Pla Roig is often used as a location for photo shootings and inspires magazines or brands.
After traveling all over the world, you have decided to settle in Tarragona. What does this place bring you?
This place brings me lots of peace and joy and contributes to building great memories with my family and my friends. It also brings me lots of inspiration for the ‘Las Insolitas’ agency.
