Trulli Bottles by R+D.LAB

Timelessness in a bottle

When picturing Italy, our minds directly generate images that show ties to antiquity, tradition, craftsmanship, art and beauty. In the most unique way, the rooted and distinctive Italian identity that has been simmering for uncountable centuries seems to always be palpable, whether we imagine the most beautiful and detailed Duomo, or the perfect pasta dish.

This identity is linked to intrinsic values that are applied into every sphere of their heritage. The consideration and application of art and craftsmanship in Italian culture is undeniable. And, in a magical and natural way, this hand-made tradition is blended with the freshness of contemporaneity. The result is a captured timelessness that continues to prove itself, as the Italian stamp.

An example of these precise values and this elegant timelessness that seem to consolidate the Italian identity can be found as simple as in a glass bottle. This is the case of the Trulli Bottles, designed by Tommaso Caldera in collaboration with R+D.LAB. These bottles are part of the Italian design studio’s glassware collection and constitute the first collaboration with the Italian designer, a special team that has continued to work together through their shared passion for honest traditions and functionality.

In fact, the Trulli Bottles accurately represent the convergence of these two principles. Intended to be set on one’s tabletop or kitchen containing olive oil and vinegar, their simple but elegant design provides the bottles a multi-purpose quality that can be easily adapted. Every container of this collection is mouth-blown, taking craftsmanship into consideration even at the most essential level.

These constructions are typical stone farmhouse houses that are located in the olive orchards of Puglia, with a particular shape that makes them unique. Their identifiable formation, that starts with a slim top and progressively enlarges to a round bottom, is not trivial. Their intentional structure is based on balance. In this way, tradition and innovation were mixed into the design, culminating in the Trulli Bottles that demonstrate that novelty and artisanship can still go hand in hand. The newness of this conception is the fact that R+D.LAB introduced different combinations of finishings, materials and colors in the same product.

Not only are these bottles based on the Italian values that are intrinsic in Tommaso’s way of understanding life, but also inspired by these traditional houses from Puglia which, in addition, is the region of Italy that stands out for its high quality olive oil production. It’s a self-complementary conception all around that promotes the collaboration between creatives and artisans, all united by the preach of elegance through functionality and simplicity. A duo that constitutes the backbone of both the R+D.LAB studio and the designer Tommaso Caldera.

Tommaso drew the inspiration from the traditional Trulli houses that consolidate the imagery of the heel of Italy, also known as Puglia.

This collection is made of resistant borosilicate glass, accompanied by a cork spout and a hand-turned wooden lid: a seemingly effortless design that hides behind it the intricacy of its artisan and curated process. The inspiration of this studied design is not trivial: Tommaso drew the inspiration from the traditional Trulli houses that consolidate the imagery of the heel of Italy, also known as Puglia.
